A nine-year-old computer boffin has written one of the world's most popular programmes for iPhone. Lim Ding Wen, aged nine, thinks computer programming is easy Lim Ding Wen has already mastered six computer languages and has been unveiled as the brains behind Doodle Kids.
The application has been downloaded more than 150,000 times from the online Apple store making it one of the site's top 10 purchases. But Lim remains modest about his incredible achievement. "I don't think it's difficult, except those long, long, long, syntax," he said when asked about programming.
By day Lim behaves like any other child in Singapore, going to school before returning to do his homework. But when his studies are complete he spends hours writing complex programmes for computers and other gadgets. The boy started using a computer at the age of two and has so far finished 20 projects.
Doodle Kids allows users to draw by touching their fingers to the iPhone screen, then clearing it by shaking the device.
Lim said he designed the programme with his younger sisters in mind and "because (I) wanted to make a very simple painting programme, especially for kids. "I don't think it's difficult, except those long, long, long, syntax."Lim Ding Wen
Lim's father, Lim Thye Chean, is a chief technology officer for a local firm and said his son grew up surrounded by computers. He taught Lim the basics on an old, yellow, 16-bit Apple II GS computer and was amazed when he started writing his own games.
"For the things he does, basically he thinks what he wants to do, we just give him ideas. Sometimes he's quite frustrated, it's quite frustrating for him," said Thye Chean.
Asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Lim replied, a little predictably perhaps: "A programmer, because I just want to be a programmer."
